Bird Cherry - Prunus padus
This small deciduous tree is found across the UK.
Colloquially known as the Hackberry due its bitter-sweet fruit.
The Bird Cherry can be identified by its smooth grey or dark grey bark. The leaves grow in an alternate pattern on the branch and are elliptical in shape and taper to a pronounced point.
The tree develops greenish buds in May which blossom into irregular, white, almond scented flowers.
The fruit then ripens from red to black in August.
